Overview
| MLIT filing number | 1124300 |
|---|---|
| Type | Statutory Recall (government-mandated recall) |
| Date filed | December 3, 2009 |
| Manufacturer(s) | Nissan |
| Component | Speedometer |
| Production period | December 17, 2001 — October 2003 |
| Vehicles affected | 102,858 units |
Defect
The circuit board material inside the speedometer is inadequate, causing the board to repeatedly expand and contract from the heat of the instrument panel's nighttime illumination. This thermal cycling can break the wire in the fuel gauge circuit, causing the fuel gauge to read artificially high. As a result, the driver may not notice the fuel tank is empty, and in the worst case, the engine may stall while driving and cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add an auxiliary circuit to the fuel gauge circuit.
