Filing in context
The Speedometer is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 36 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 62 Nissan notifications from 2009 in this archive. For scale, 456 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 10 months.
Defect
The circuit board material inside the speedometer is inadequate, causing the board to repeatedly expand and contract from the heat of the instrument panel's nighttime illumination. This thermal cycling can break the wire in the fuel gauge circuit, causing the fuel gauge to read artificially high. As a result, the driver may not notice the fuel tank is empty, and in the worst case, the engine may stall while driving and cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add an auxiliary circuit to the fuel gauge circuit.
