Filing in context
The Shock absorber is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 6 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 44 Isuzu notifications from 2009 in this archive. For scale, 2,410 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 1 month.
Defect
On large tractors equipped with air spring suspension, the owner's manual provides insufficient instructions for height adjustment when disconnecting a trailer, and the shock absorber stopper design is inadequate. If a trailer is disconnected without properly adjusting the coupler height, the shock absorber may extend to its full stroke. This causes the piston retaining nut inside the shock absorber to loosen. If the vehicle continues to be operated in this condition, the shock absorber rod may pull out and, in the worst case, contact the tire and result in a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, affix a sticker to the owner's manual detailing precautions for trailer disconnection, and replace the shock absorbers with corrected parts.
