Filing in context
The Brake Lights is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 5 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 23 Honda notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 669 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 4 months.
Defect
Excessive lubricant was applied to the telescopic mechanism of the steering column—the mechanism that allows the steering wheel position to be adjusted forward and rearward. Oil from the lubricant drips onto the brake light switch. Heat generated at the switch contacts causes insulating deposits to form, resulting in contact failure. As a result, the brake lights and auxiliary brake lights may fail to illuminate, and the shift lever may become unable to move out of the Park position.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the brake light switch assembly and the wiring-side connector with new parts, clean the wiring-side terminals, and add a brake light switch cover.
