Defect

During vehicle manufacturing, an improper lubricant was applied to the contact points of the brake light switch. Heat generated by repeated contact cycling oxidizes the lubricant residue, increasing contact resistance at the switch terminals. When the electrical load on the contacts is low, the switch may fail to conduct, causing the brake lights to stop illuminating.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the brake light switch with the corrected part.
