Filing in context
The Other (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 8 Toyota notifications from 2008 in this archive. For scale, 2,836 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 years and 6 months.
Defect
In fire apparatus, the engine block heater (cold-weather starting aid) is equipped with insulating caps on its terminals that have insufficient heat resistance. Repeated extended energization over a long period causes the caps to degrade and lose their insulating properties. If road salt or other de-icing agents subsequently penetrate the terminal area, corrosion increases contact resistance, causing the terminals to overheat and resulting in a broken wire or burn damage. In the worst case, this can lead to a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
Replace the heater and power cord on all vehicles with the corrected parts.
