Filing in context
The Other (Electrical Equipment) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Nissan notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 3,315 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 1 month.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the meter panel circuit board is improperly designed. Repeated thermal expansion of the board caused by rising temperatures inside the meter causes cracks to develop in the solder joints of resistors. Continued operation allows these cracks to progress until the shift position indicator on the panel no longer updates when the driver changes gears. In the worst case, forward/reverse switching becomes impossible, and the vehicle may move in the direction opposite to the selected shift position.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the meter panel with a corrected/revised part.
