Filing in context
The Fuel hose/pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 26 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 3,571 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 6 months.
Defect
The clamping structure of the rubber-backed bracket that secures the fuel injection pump delivery pipe is improperly designed. As the rubber element deteriorates, the mounting bolts and nuts loosen and may fall off. If a dislodged bolt or nut becomes trapped between the starter motor and its terminal, a short circuit occurs. In the worst case, the starter harness may be damaged, rendering the engine unable to start, or a vehicle fire may result. (Note: This recall supplements the original recall filed on September 29, 2004, under Notification No. 1254. Additional affected vehicles omitted from the original scope are added under this new notification.)
Corrective action
Depending on the bracket fastening method, perform one of the following: (1) Where the bracket is secured by a bolt, replace the assembly with a corrected part incorporating a spring washer and adhesive applied to the bolt threads. (2) Where the bracket is secured by a nut, replace the flanged nut with a non-flanged nut, add a spring washer, and apply adhesive to the stud bolt threads before tightening. In addition, inspect the rubber element of the bracket and replace it with a new part if deterioration is found. Affix a caution label noting service precautions to the top surface of the engine.
