Filing in context
The Steering Gear Box is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 10 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 1,385 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 3 months.
Defect
The ball recirculation tube (circulator) inside the steering gear box has a design defect that provides insufficient strength against excessive steering input. Repeatedly operating the steering while the tire is in contact with a curb may damage the circulator. In the worst case, this can result in loss of steering control.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the steering gear box with a corrected part. Because full supply of corrected parts will take time, an interim measure requires inspection of steering operation; vehicles exhibiting catching, stiffness, or other abnormalities are to receive the corrected part immediately, while vehicles showing no anomaly will receive the corrected part at a later date. In addition, owners will be notified not to operate the steering while the tire is in contact with a curb.
