Filing in context
The Parking Brake General is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 5 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,853 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 9 months.
Defect
On rear two-axle vehicles, the spring-type parking brake chamber mounting bracket on the rearmost axle has insufficient strength. Vibration during driving may cause cracks to develop in the bracket. Continued use can cause the bracket to fracture, reducing parking brake effectiveness. In the worst case, the chamber may detach, rendering the parking brake on the rearmost wheels inoperable, or the air hose may be damaged, causing an air leak.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the rearmost axle housing assembly with one incorporating a corrected spring-type parking brake chamber mounting bracket. As an interim measure while corrected parts are being sourced, inspect the bracket for cracks and weld-repair any that are found.
