Filing in context
The Other (Electrical System) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 12 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 8 Suzuki notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 763 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 5 months.
Defect
The electrical circuit from the generator to the carburetor heater—which warms the carburetor in low ambient temperatures—is improperly designed, causing excessive voltage to be applied to the carburetor heater when it operates. This causes the interior of the carburetor heater to overheat and short circuit, grounding the generator's current through the carburetor heater. As a result, current supply from the generator to the headlamps and other lights is interrupted, and the headlamps may go out.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add a lead wire and a clamp to secure the lead wire to the wiring harness, modify the electrical circuit from the generator to the carburetor heater, and replace the carburetor heater with a new unit.
