Defect

Anti-rust oil was improperly applied to the brake pedal area during assembly on some vehicles, allowing the oil to penetrate the contact points of the brake light switch. Arcing at the contacts carbonizes the oil residue, causing contact resistance to increase and preventing the brake lights from illuminating.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, wipe away anti-rust oil from the area around the brake light switch mounting point on the brake pedal, and replace the switch with a new part.
