Filing in context

The Other (Emissions/Noise) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 4 Subaru notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 292 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 6 months.

Defect

On some vehicles, the atmospheric vent port of the evaporative emission canister was not opened during manufacturing. Continued use causes pressure fluctuations inside the fuel tank to generate a crack in the upper section of the tank. In the worst case, fuel leaks from the tank.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, inspect the canister atmospheric vent port. Any port found still closed must be opened, and the fuel tank and canister must be replaced with new parts.
