Defect

Oil used during molding of the camshaft and related pulleys adhered to the diesel engine timing belt, causing the belt to swell and belt tension to become excessive on some units. Continued use in this condition places excessive bending stress on the camshaft. In the worst case, the camshaft may fracture, rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the timing belt with a new unit.
