Defect

In the front suspension, insufficient torque control during assembly of the nut securing the damper unit to the damper mount has resulted in low clamping force on some units due to manufacturing variation. When the steering is turned, play develops at the damper rod joint, subjecting the area around the joint to excessive stress. If the condition is allowed to continue, the rod may fracture, compromising driving stability.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the front suspension damper unit, nut, damper mount, thrust plate, and surrounding components (including washers) with new parts and tighten to the specified torque.
