Filing in context
The ABS is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 30 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 26 Nissan notifications from 2019 in this archive. For scale, 510 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 10 months.
Defect
In the ABS actuator, insufficient resistance to brake fluid of unstable chemical composition—including types other than those specified—allows a gel-like substance to form on the zinc-plated surfaces of the valves, degrading valve sliding performance. If a valve fails to close properly, hydraulic pressure drops, causing the brake pedal to travel deeper during brake application. As a result, stopping distance may increase.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, internally flush the ABS actuator and verify operation; if sticking is detected, replace the actuator with a corrected part. On all vehicles, also replace the brake fluid with a type that inhibits corrosion of zinc plating, replace the reservoir cap stamped with the brake fluid type specification, and update the owner's manual to reflect the correct brake fluid type.
