Filing in context
The Starting System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 41 Honda notifications from 2015 in this archive. For scale, 4,521 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 11 months.
Defect
During manufacturing of the starter magnetic switch, the waterproof sealant was improperly applied, allowing sealant to infiltrate the terminal area where the fuse is assembled. Over time, the sealant softens in service, reducing contact pressure at the fuse terminal and increasing contact resistance, which causes the terminal to generate heat. Continued use may cause the fuse assembly area to melt and create a conduction fault, stalling the engine with no possibility of restart. In the worst case, a short circuit in the starter magnetic switch circuit may result in a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the starter magnetic switch and replace it with a known-good unit. Also inspect the fuse coupler; if melting is found, replace the engine wiring harness with a new part.
