Filing in context
The Other (Exhaust Emissions / Noise) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 42 Isuzu notifications from 2011 in this archive. For scale, 2,438 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 2 months.
Defect
On tractors equipped with a diesel particulate device (DPD), the heat shield is improperly shaped. During DPD regeneration, strong wind striking the right rear of the vehicle deflects exhaust gas onto the relay box, and the heat from the exhaust gas can melt and damage the relay box. If the vehicle continues to be operated in this condition, rainwater and other moisture can enter the damaged relay box, causing corrosion of the electrical components inside and resulting in poor electrical continuity. In the worst case, the engine may stall or lights and other lamps may fail to illuminate.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the heat shield with a corrected part. On vehicles where the relay box shows damage, replace it with a new unit.
