Defect
In the variable valve timing mechanism, the contact pressure setting between the lost-motion spring retainer and the rocker arm slipper surface is incorrect. Immediately after engine start, lubrication during idling is insufficient, causing sliding resistance of the retainer to increase. This allows the spring to move laterally and repeatedly contact the spring holder. Once fatigue limits are exceeded, the spring fractures and produces abnormal noise. In the worst case, the fractured spring may become jammed in the camshaft, causing the engine to stall with no ability to restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the lost-motion spring and retainer with corrected parts.

状況
可変バルブタイミング機構に用いているロストモーションスプリングのリテーナとロッカーアームのスリッパ部との面圧設定が不適切なため、エンジン始動直後のアイドリング時に潤滑が十分に行われずリテーナの摺動抵抗が高くなることがある。そのため、当該スプリングが横方向に動き、スプリングホルダと干渉を繰り返して疲労限度を超えると折損して異音が発生し、最悪の場合、折損したスプリングがカムシャフトに噛み込み、エンジンが停止して再始動できなくなるおそれがある。
改善措置
全車両、ロストモーションスプリングとリテーナを対策品に交換する。
