Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Nissan & Nissan Diesel.
The Brake lights is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Nissan notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 3,714 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 months.
Defect
The electrical circuit for the lighting system is improperly designed, causing the brake lights to fail to illuminate when the auxiliary retarder (electromagnetic retarder) is active. This fault may also damage the brake-light activation circuit within the electromagnetic retarder's electronic control unit, after which the brake lights will similarly fail to illuminate during retarder operation. This notification supersedes recall notification No. 1421 filed on May 10, 2005; the corrective measures have been revised and this filing replaces that remedy.
Corrective action
Add electrical wiring to the affected circuit on all vehicles and replace the electromagnetic retarder electronic control unit with a new unit.
