Filing in context
The Parking Cable / Rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,228 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 7 months.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with spring-type parking brakes, the heat treatment of the roller at the wedge tip—which expands the brake shoes—is incorrect, or the wedge components are improperly assembled. This may cause the wedge to fracture. In the worst case, the parking brake malfunctions and parking braking force is reduced.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the roller at the wedge tip. If the roller is deformed or fractured, replace the wedge rod as an assembly with a serviceable unit. If any component differs from the current service part, replace it with the current service part.
