Filing in context
The Parking Brake (General) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 16 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,227 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 7 months.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with spring-type parking brakes, the internal dimensions of the spring chamber and the spring seat geometry are incorrect. When the spring is compressed to release the parking brake, the springs contact each other or contact the chamber body, causing the spring coating to peel and rust to form. Continued operation in this condition may cause the spring to fracture. In the worst case, the fractured spring reduces parking brake effectiveness, or the fractured spring end damages the diaphragm, causing an air leak that prevents the parking brake from releasing.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the brake chamber as an assembly with a corrected part. In addition, affix a sticker to the maintenance booklet of each affected vehicle indicating that the spring must be inspected every two years.
