Defect

On low-floor rear-tandem-drive vehicles, the companion flange connecting the propeller shaft between the forward and rearward rear axles has an incorrect clearance at the mating surfaces. This causes wear on the spline of the rear axle pinion gear shaft, leading to loosening of the castle nut. Additionally, if the castle nut was not tightened to the specified value, wear develops on the collar between the shaft bearings, damaging the bearings and causing further castle nut loosening. Continued operation in this condition may cause the castle nut cotter pin to fracture, allowing the companion flange to disengage or the pinion shaft to fracture. In the worst case, the propeller shaft may detach from the vehicle, rendering it inoperable. (Note: This recall supersedes recall No. 910 dated January 23, 2003. The corrective instructions issued under that recall were inadequate; the instructions and the scope of affected vehicles have been revised, and corrective action is being taken again.)

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the final drive assembly with a serviceable unit. Because supply of replacement units requires time, as an interim measure, inspect the companion flange installation condition and replace any unit found to be abnormal. Units found to be normal will be replaced with a serviceable unit at a later date.
