Filing in context
The Engine assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 23 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 10 Mazda notifications from 2000 in this archive. For scale, 1,007 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 11 months.
Defect
The auto-tensioner, which maintains timing belt tension, has insufficient vibration damping performance on some units. Continued use can cause the external spring of the auto-tensioner to fracture, allowing the timing belt to slacken and, in the worst case, causing the engine to stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the auto-tensioner and replace any affected unit with the corrected part.
