Filing in context
The Engine Assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 43 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Subaru notifications from 1997 in this archive. For scale, 460 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 4 months.
Defect
The camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor installed on the engine are defective on certain vehicles. Continued use may cause internal contact failure within the sensors, preventing them from transmitting normal signals. In the worst case, the engine may stall at idle or other times and fail to restart.
Corrective action
Verify the lot number of the affected parts on all vehicles. Replace any confirmed affected sensors with conforming parts.
