Filing in context
The Airbag is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 225 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 7 Subaru notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 638 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 9 months.
Defect
In the driver-side airbag control unit, the solder connection on the internal shock wave sensor was improperly made. The solder joint may develop a crack, causing the airbag warning lamp to illuminate. If an impact is then applied to the vehicle — such as striking the horn with significant force or passing over a deep depression in the road — the airbag may deploy unexpectedly.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, verify the control unit serial number. Units identified as subject to this recall must be replaced with a conforming unit. Because full supply of conforming units will take time, an interim measure will be implemented: owners will be notified of precautions to observe when the airbag warning lamp is illuminated, and vehicles with the warning lamp lit will be prioritized for replacement.
