Filing in context
The Cruise Control System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This is the only Subaru notification from 1996 in this archive. For scale, 2,671 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 months.
Defect
On turbocharged engine vehicles equipped with a cruise control system, the hook on the cruise control lever mounted to the throttle body is improperly shaped. When the accelerator pedal is fully depressed, the cruise control cable may disengage from the lever groove and ride up onto the hook, causing the engine to remain at high rpm.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add a cable retention cover to the hook on the affected lever.
