Filing in context
The Door is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 103 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 3 Mazda notifications from 1994 in this archive. For scale, 381 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 9 months.
Defect
When the driver- or front-passenger-side door handle (plastic) is operated repeatedly with excessive force in high ambient temperatures, the connection point between the handle and its release rod (the latch release bar of the door opening mechanism) may break, causing the release rod to disengage so the door cannot be opened from outside. If the door lock is then released and the door window is lowered while the release rod has fallen inward, the lower edge of the glass pushes the rod. In the worst case, this may cause the door to open unexpectedly.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, install a protector to prevent the release rod from falling inward.
