Filing in context
The ABS is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 30 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 36 Mitsubishi notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 2,349 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 6 months.
Issue
When exposed to unexpectedly strong unauthorized high-output radio frequency signals, the ABS control unit (ECU) may misinterpret noise superimposed on the wheel speed sensor signals as a wheel lock condition. This causes the ABS control valve to malfunction, producing abnormal noise and, in the worst case, reducing brake effectiveness.
Corrective action
Replace the ECU with a corrected part and simultaneously replace the wheel speed sensors, ABS control valves, electrical harness, and brake lines. On certain vehicles with ECU-compatible configurations, replace only the ECU with a corrected part. (For vehicles where supply of corrected parts is delayed, notify owners of the defect as an interim measure and perform the remedy at a later date.)
