Filing in context
The Service brake — general is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 16 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 39 Toyota notifications from 2021 in this archive. For scale, 2,246 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 1 month.
Defect
The engine control unit contains an improperly designed control program. Certain operations immediately after engine start—such as shutting the engine off—can apply a reverse-rotation force to the engine, causing lubricating oil inside the vacuum pump to flow backward and damaging internal components. This compromises brake booster effectiveness, reducing braking force and extending stopping distance.
Corrective action
Reprogram the engine control unit on all vehicles to the corrected software specification.
