Filing in context
The Chain is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 27 Suzuki notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 2,817 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 months.
Defect
The engine control unit software is incorrect. During a 1st-to-2nd gear shift, if the transmission goes to neutral instead of engaging 2nd gear and the throttle is opened, the engine over-revs. If the rider then engages 2nd gear without disengaging the clutch, excessive force is applied to the drivetrain. This causes the drive chain to stretch abnormally and, in the worst case, the chain may detach or break, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the engine control unit with a corrected part that incorporates an over-rev prevention control. Additionally, inspect the drive chain for abnormal stretch; if abnormal stretch is found, replace the drive chain, engine sprocket, and rear sprocket with new parts. Because preparation of the remedy parts requires additional time, owners will be notified of the defect as a precaution and will receive a subsequent notification to return their vehicle once parts are available.
Affected models & chassis ranges
This filing lists 2 type code(s). A vehicle is affected if its chassis number falls within one of the ranges below.
