Filing in context
The Other (Control System) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Mitsubishi notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 4,381 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 5 months.
Defect
In the negative-pressure switch that controls the vacuum pump of the brake booster, some units were manufactured without performing secondary vulcanization of the internal silicone rubber. This causes siloxane and other gases to accumulate inside the switch. Arc discharge generated as the movable contact separates from the fixed contact can then deposit highly insulating silicone compounds on the contact surfaces. The resulting increase in contact resistance causes a conductivity failure, and the vacuum pump does not activate even when negative pressure in the vacuum tank drops below the threshold. Brake pedal effort increases and stopping distance is extended. Additionally, when negative pressure in the vacuum tank drops, a warning buzzer sounds; however, the buzzer volume is too low and the driver may not notice the pressure loss.
Corrective action
Replace all negative-pressure switches containing non-secondary-vulcanized silicone rubber with conforming units. On all vehicles, also replace the warning buzzer with the corrected/revised part.
