Filing in context
The Clutch is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 31 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 4,592 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 9 months.
Defect
The control software in the ECU governing gear changes in the automated mechanical transmission is incorrect. If the vehicle is brought to a stop in Drive range without depressing the clutch pedal, the clutch disengages automatically. Without brake application, the vehicle may begin to creep at very low speed on a downhill grade or similar condition. The ECU then misinterprets this movement as normal driving and automatically re-engages the clutch, causing the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally. Note: This recall supplements notification no. 1268 (October 13, 2004), which contained errors in the affected vehicle selection; additional vehicles have been identified and are covered under this new filing.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the ECU with the corrected part.
