Defect

On police vehicles, the battery's internal design is inadequate. Extended idling operation raises battery temperature, causing the positive plates to expand and deform, and allowing material to detach from the positive plates. Continued use causes gas generation that expels battery fluid and lowers the fluid level. In the worst case, an internal short circuit damages the battery and prevents engine starting.

Corrective action

Inspect the battery on all vehicles. Where an uncorrected part is fitted, replace it with the corrected/revised part.
