Filing in context
The Battery is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 20 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,254 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 months.
Defect
On police vehicles, the battery's internal design is inadequate. Extended idling operation raises battery temperature, causing the positive plates to expand and deform, and allowing material to detach from the positive plates. Continued use causes gas generation that expels battery fluid and lowers the fluid level. In the worst case, an internal short circuit damages the battery and prevents engine starting.
Corrective action
Inspect the battery on all vehicles. Where an uncorrected part is fitted, replace it with the corrected/revised part.
