Filing in context
The Service Brake - General is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,244 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 9 months.
Defect
In gasoline-engine vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the brake booster (master-vac) has insufficient capacity. During automatic engine warm-up, idle speed rises and brake force becomes insufficient to hold against torque converter creep. If a refrigeration compressor or similar auxiliary load is also engaged during warm-up, brake force decreases further. As a result, if the selector is shifted into a drive range before the engine has fully warmed up, the vehicle may move even with the brake pedal depressed.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the brake booster with the corrected part. On vehicles equipped with a refrigeration compressor, also replace the engine control unit with the corrected part. Because supply of the corrected engine control unit requires additional lead time, vehicles equipped with a refrigeration compressor will first receive the corrected brake booster and the following interim measure: affix a driver warning placard instructing the operator not to move the vehicle until engine coolant temperature has risen to operating level.
