Defect

The master cylinder piston geometry is incorrect. When the brake auto-hold function (Note 1) or hill-start assist function (Note 2) releases, the piston may not return fully to its home position, causing brake drag. Continued operation with this condition may cause greater-than-intended deceleration when the accelerator pedal is released. The driver may respond by pressing the accelerator more deeply, and in the worst case, if the brake drag suddenly clears while driving, unintended acceleration may occur. Note 1: Auto-hold maintains the vehicle at a standstill after the driver releases the brake pedal following a stop. Note 2: Hill-start assist holds brake pressure for up to two seconds while the driver transitions from the brake pedal to the accelerator during a hill start, preventing rollback.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the master cylinder with a corrected part.
