Filing in context
The Exhaust Emission Reduction System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 34 Mitsubishi notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 2,714 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 months.
Defect
In the engine, the vacuum pump shaft used for the exhaust gas recirculation system received improper heat treatment, resulting in insufficient strength. The shaft may fracture, eliminating vacuum generation. Without vacuum, the exhaust gas recirculation valve cannot operate, and the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas may exceed the regulatory limit.
Corrective action
Replace the vacuum pump with a corrected part on all vehicles.
