Defect

The spline machining on the axle shaft is improper, resulting in insufficient engagement between the axle shaft spline and the differential side gear. Continued use in this condition may cause the side gear to break, rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the axle shaft with a known-good unit and replace the differential carrier with a new unit.
