Filing in context

The Starting System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 5 Isuzu notifications from 1994 in this archive. For scale, 2,720 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 10 months.

Defect

The retaining clip that secures the battery cable (the electrical wiring between the battery and the starter motor) is improperly installed. Continued use causes vibration during driving to chafe the cable against the clip, damaging the cable insulation and allowing moisture to enter. This leads to corrosion of the cable and, in the worst case, a broken wire that prevents the engine from starting.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, inspect the battery cable for damage. If the conductor is exposed, replace the cable with the corrected part. If the conductor is not exposed, add protective sheathing to the cable.
