Filing in context
The Pressure Control and Transmission Unit is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 10 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 1,668 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 1 month.
Defect
In the hydraulic booster that multiplies brake pedal effort, the piston cup groove machining in the pressure-intensifying cylinder is improper. This results in insufficient sealing between the piston cup and piston. Repeated brake pedal application generates negative pressure that draws air past the piston cup seal and into the brake fluid. In the worst case, braking force may decrease.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the pressure-intensifying cylinder with a corrected part and replace the brake pipes with new ones. As an interim measure while corrected parts are being sourced, inspect the clearance between the brake pedal and floor when the pedal is depressed; replace with corrected parts on any vehicle where clearance is below the specified value, and schedule replacement on vehicles that are within specification.
